Social Media Editor for Pro Publica

ProPublica is seeking a Social Media Editor who can design and implement social efforts to deepen and advance ProPublica’s reporting.

Candidates should have extensive experience with social media and should have previous journalism experience. Responsibilities include day-to-day oversight of @ProPublica and #MuckReads, and the integration of social into our data features. For example, we recently used Facebook to surface data of personal relevance for our readers and then made it easy for them to share their own personal collections. We also invited journalists outside of ProPublica to be guest editors of our #MuckReads feature.

Using Twitter and Facebook, ProPublica consistently points readers to the best investigative and accountability reporting. We need someone who goes beyond tweeting headlines and quickly identifies shareable and buried bits. Candidates should be highly discerning and have strong journalistic instincts.

This position demands creativity and teamwork, as the editor will work closely with ProPublica’s reporters and editors. This editor will also train ProPublica’s editors and reporters, and spotlight new tools and methods to integrate into the newsroom.

The position also includes some responsibilities helping manage ProPublica’s online call-outs for sources. Skills required: facility with web analytics, basic project management, HTML, Photoshop. The position reports to Amanda Michel, ProPublica’s Director of Online Engagement. The social media editor would work out of ProPublica’s Manhattan office.

Please send a cover letter to amanda@propublica.org explaining how you would approach social at ProPublica, examples of a new feature or strategy you’d undertake, and links to your previous work. Feel free to tweet questions @amichel.
